Fiery improvisation marks this one man tour-de-force by British Indian sarod player Soumik Datta. Transport yourself through ancient Afghanistan, colonial India and present day Britain to unfold the mystery of the 19-stringed lute known as the sarod. With infectious rhythms, digital guests and a critically acclaimed front man, this genre-breaking show examines man’s deep and timeless bond with music.
Soumik Datta has collaborated with Beyonce, Jay Z, Bill Bailey, Nitin Sawhney, Anoushka Shankar, Talvin Singh, Joss Stone, Farhan Akhtar and Shankar Mahadevan bringing the rare, fretless sarod into a global arena.
As a film maker, Channel 4 broadcast Soumik’s directorial debut, a travel series titled Tuning 2 You on the fading traditions of rural Indian musicians. As a composer, Soumik’s scores have been played by acclaimed orchestras including London Philharmonic and Adelaide Symphony. This year he was commissioned to write music for the British Film Institute to celebrate 70 years of Indian Independence. His next album is being published by Shakespeare’s Globe and will feature a collaboration with City of London Sinfonia. Soumik is now writing his first opera in partnership with Royal Opera House, London where he connects his roots in Indian music with a bold, progressive attitude.
Fretless Nomad is produced by Soumik Datta Arts Ltd – a UK charity that enables young artists to collaborate and realise new, contemporary visions.
Soumik Datta’s performance on Saturday 2 December will also include a Q&A session with the artist.
